This year, on this significant day, Rishikul Yogshala accepted the opportunity to instill the values of peace, fortitude, and forbearance in our students by reflecting on India’s history of independence from a humanistic perspective.

In 1950, this day was commemorated with a salute of twenty-one guns as the tricolor national flag was unfurled and hoisted by then-President Dr. Rajendra Prasad at the majestic Durbar Hall. This moment marked the birth of the Indian Republic, the adoption of the constitution, and the establishment of democracy. It was the beginning of a challenging journey towards unity in a diverse nation of 1.3 billion people. The success of a republic depends on harmony across race, caste, religion, and gender. This concept of unity, or “yuj,” is deeply rooted in the philosophy of yoga. The nation where the holistic spiritual art of yoga originated found its independence not just by overcoming foreign rule but by achieving internal harmony. For a yogi, there is much inspiration to be drawn from these historical events.

In a demonstration of the indomitable spiritual power that guided India’s independence leaders, our yoga teachers performed asanas symbolizing courage. Following this inspiring display, the Rishikul Yogshala community gathered on the lawn, where all joined hands to hoist the national flag.

Later in the day, a performance of bhajans, or devotional songs, was held in the school’s courtyard. This event provided insight into “bhakti,” or devotion to the Supreme Being, celebrated in India in many forms and names. Complete submission to the Supreme Being in all actions and struggles is a hallmark of Indian spiritual thought, extending even into nationalistic movements. Our students sang “Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram,” a beloved bhajan of Mahatma Gandhi, capturing the spirit of total submission to a higher Self during the nation’s struggle for freedom.

For our students, Republic Day was not only a celebration of national pride but also a demonstration of how spirituality is intrinsic to Indian culture and yoga, serving as a guiding philosophy in all aspects of life.

Conclusion

At Rishikul Yogshala, Republic Day serves as a poignant reminder of how deeply intertwined spirituality and national identity are in India. Our celebration highlighted the enduring principles of peace, unity, and devotion that are at the heart of both yoga and Indian heritage. By reflecting on these values, we honor the legacy of our past and inspire our students to integrate these teachings into their own lives.
