Healthy Sattvic Food During YTTC

For thousands of years, the yogis of the Himalayas observed, experimented, and fine-tuned their approach to life. And today we reap the rewards of their dedication. We are, simply put, in pursuit of health. Full health requires a diet that nourishes and sustains us, whilst at the same time has purifying and cleansing qualities too. We offer a vegetarian yogic diet to our students that is designed to help them get the most out of their bodies and their practice.

We understand at the Rishikul Yogshala that food can be more than just fuel, it's a part of the yoga journey itself. That's why we prepare pure and nourishing sattvic meals, which reward both body and mind with balance. Our food is vegetarian, made with fresh, seasonal, locally sourced foods, whatever the time of year. Light and simple to digest, it is easily processed into energy at first contact with your stomach lining.

Every meal is prepared to nourish your yoga practice and meditation by keeping the body energy-rich and the mind quiet. Without processed food or heavy spices, our meals promote mental clarity, focus and peace of mind. To eat sattvic meals in this environment is not only healthy but also an exercise for your senses; it connects you with the true spirit of yoga.

Importance of a Yogic Diet in Daily Practice

What we choose to eat in order to sustain our physical bodies is as important as how we move, bend, stretch, flex and twist in asana practice, how we breathe during pranayama exercises and how we focus in our meditation practices.

Students who are exploring their physical limits in Ashtanga and Hatha Asana practice need to be well nourished and hydrated, if they are to get the most out of their learning and, of course, their physical practice.

Yogic Diet is based on natural healing, rejuvenating and energizing elements from the revered science of Ayurveda. It is a perfect food for nourishing the mind, body and souls of budding yogis.

At Rishikul Yogshala, we make sure that every student stays well-nourished and hydrated throughout their yoga journey. Fresh filtered water is always available, and the day begins with a calming cup of herbal lemon tea or green tea to gently awaken the body and prepare it for morning practice.

During the day, students can take comfort in warm, relaxing cups of herbal tea and the well-loved Indian masala chai. These short sips don't just keep your body replenished throughout the day but also bring a snap of calm and togetherness, leaving the practice of yoga with a refreshing aftertaste.

Dishes at Rishikul Yogshala are prepared with care using Ayurvedic Indian herbs and spices like turmeric, cinnamon, clove, and cardamom. Fresh fruits and vegetables are sourced daily, and from these, our kitchen team creates a variety of wholesome meals for every student to enjoy.

The food is tasty, aromatic, and light, without the use of strong spices that may feel heavy or unsettling. We also understand that many students may not be familiar with traditional Indian food, so the meals are thoughtfully prepared to suit people from different cultures. Special dietary needs and allergies are always respected and taken care of.

Breakfast

Breakfast at Rishikul Yogshala is a special time. By the time students sit down to eat, they have already completed their morning Ashtanga or Hatha yoga class along with a pranayama session. Our kitchen team takes pride in keeping the trays full so that everyone can enjoy as much porridge, papaya, or banana as they like. Along with fresh fruits and porridge, there are always a couple of savoury dishes and healthy carbohydrates to keep students energised for the day ahead. The experience of sharing breakfast in the garden is one that many students remember fondly, even long after their course has finished.

Lunch

By lunchtime, students are ready for another nourishing meal, and the kitchen provides just that. The menu often includes a variety of flavorful vegetable curries, comforting dal (lentils), and other savoury dishes. To complete the meal, rice and chapatis are always served, making lunch both wholesome and satisfying.

yogic meal practices at the school
  • Rishikul Yogshala is a yoga school run in accordance with yogic moral and ethical values and, certain practices are held to be very important, none more so than the practice of eating in silence.
  • Before every meal, everyone gathers to put their hands together in prana mudra (palms together at the heart center) and, together chant the Meal Mantra. Chanting puts us into a sattvic frame of mind that is calm, and serene and, beneficial to the act of eating. This communal act integrates mealtimes as part of the wider yogic practices and, highlights the importance of nutrition.
  • Students are offered the chance to lead the chanting as part of their development, putting into practice straight away what they are being learned.
  • Eating in silence, hard as it is for people coming from the cultures of the west, where meals can be very much more social and talkative, is a habit that the school cares deeply about promoting. In the first place, when you talk and eat together, much more air makes it into your system. Air in the digestive system slows down digestion and can make a person feel quite uncomfortable, less air means less discomfort coupled with more efficient processing of the nutrients that have been so carefully selected and lovingly prepared.

  • Everything is freshly prepared on site. Meals are balanced and designed to be purifying as well as energising. To achieve this, the first step is to prepare everything with love. The cooks, like the students, adhere to the teachings of the yogis, and they ensure that negative thoughts and feelings are not present during the preparation of food. Just in case, the meal mantra offers additional purification.
  • (Maitri, the practice of friendliness, is present throughout the school – the smiles that are exchanged and kind greetings feed into Mudita, the universal glow of well being that all yoga practitioners have access to through their practice. When this is achieved, positive thoughts easily replace negative ones, behaviours are filled with compassion, Karuna and, harmonious living becomes a glorious habit.)
