The ‘Who, What, Why and How’ of the Yoga Alliance

Who Are They?

The Yoga Alliance is an International nonprofit organisation based in the United States of America, which creates a network, works in interest of the society through education and hosts numerous developmental activities. The Yoga Alliance promotes and supports safe and high-quality professional training practices. It also places a large role on research of yoga as well as spreading knowledge and raising awareness.

The importance of the Yoga Alliance for practitioners is that it creates a framework of requirements in order to register as a teacher with the organisation (RYT).  In order to register with the Yoga Alliance as a yoga teacher, students must receive a certain standard of yoga teacher training at a Registered Yoga School (RYS) that is offered by the Yoga Alliance at the 200, 300 and 500 hour levels. Yoga Alliance Registry is a voluntary, internationally recognized credentialing system that students can register with upon completion of their teacher training course and prior to teaching.

Choosing a school who is accredited by the Yoga Alliance has a number of benefits. It is an established organisation that sets a level of standards and requirements for each school to receive accreditation.  A RYS or better known as a Registered Yoga School, acknowledges that the teacher training course meets the standards of the Yoga Alliance curriculum and that the teachers are fully trained and experienced in their given field. These credentials ensure a standardized practice and create trust between student and school during the teacher training course. Each teacher training course; 200, 300, 500 hour level, has its own set of standards to meet the requirements of receiving accreditation from the Yoga Alliance. Only when students have accomplished and completed their yoga teacher training course with a Registered Yoga School, can they register to become a RYT, Registered Yoga Teacher. So be sure to check if the yoga school is fully registered before attending.

It’s important to find a school that is registered with the Yoga Alliance for the high standards of education you will receive during your teacher training course but also because it gives you the opportunity to become a RYT. Signing up and registering as a RYT has many benefits for your future yoga path and potential career as a teacher. It can increase your credentials as a teacher as you will be part of an association that promotes standards for training and practice. The Yoga Alliance provides continuous educational materials including live online workshops and publications pertaining to research on yoga and other RYT and RYS information. It increases your visibility as you are part of an international network and community of likeminded people. Plus, the Yoga Alliance allows you to use the RYT designation for your own marketing of your yoga studio.
